BLUE VALLEY YACHT CLUB
REGULAR BOARD MEETING
Directors Present: Diane Barker, Ken Hays, Jane
Mullen, Bart Bartholomew, Tom Albright, Randy Zelenka and Wayne Martin
Directors
Absent: Bob Mullen
Others
Present: None
Call
to Order: Meeting called to order at 7:14 (after dessert) by Diane Barker
Randy Zelenka moved that the
minutes of the May 3 meeting be approved as written; Ken Hays seconded the
motion and the motion carried unanimously.
REPORTS:
Vice Commodore:
Ken Hays reported that
the gutters for the shelter had been installed.
Ken thanked Bart for mowing
and trimming prior to the Memorial Day weekend.
Ken also reported that he
had people come out to do an estimate on expanding the dinghy park; he has yet
not received the data; he expects to have it prior to next meeting.
Rear Commodore:
Wayne Martin reported that he has made several repairs to the docks; his recently repaired hinges have been holding well, however.
Wayne also reported that he has purchased and installed the new, stronger electric winch on the work barge; cost was $329 plus $35 for steel. He feels certain that even with the purchase of a strong deep cycle battery, the entire winch project will have cost under $500.
Social Director:
Jane Mullen announced that 23 people had attended the picnic after the Scott Liebler Memorial Race.
Jane also remarked that Henry Otto’s Saturday morning breakfast had been very well done and all those in attendance appreciated his efforts. Diane Barker will send Henry a thank you card.
The next social will be on Friday, 2 July. The event will consist of a raft-up with everyone bringing snacks and drinks.
Treasurer:
Tom Albright submitted a written treasurer’s report. Later in the evening it was noted that Tom had refunded $80 to Carl Hinrichs as a refund for his Sunfish storage when it should have been only $40. Tom will contact Carl to correct the error. .
Secretary:
Bart Bartholomew thanked
Wayne Martin for taking minutes at the May meeting.
Bart also reported that he
had posted numerous pictures from the Memorial Day weekend activities on the
web site.
Race Director:
Randy reported that the Scott Liebler Memorial Race had been a success.
Randy informed the Board that the engine for the committee boat does not reach full power; he is thinking that it is most likely a fuel problem.
Randy will most likely miss the next few races because he wishes to accompany his son to baseball games
Commodore:
Diane Barker reported that 6 people had signed up for the Women’s Sailing Seminar. Diane has ordered BVYC caps which will be given to seminar participants as part of their enrollment package. She feels that very likely other sailors will want to buy one of these caps.
OLD
BUSINESS:
Dinghy dock: The board members had a lengthy discussion about the pros and cons of making a dock similar to the one currently in place versus a dock that did not reach the shoreline, the latter type being proposed by Mike Lucas. The Board’s consensus was that a second, multi-purpose dock, similar to the one currently in place, would be of greater use to a larger number of members.
Ken Hays moved that the Club concentrate their time and funds this year designing, constructing and emplacing a second dock. The dock would be intended primarily for dinghy sailors and wind surfers. It would be located as far to the north as possible thereby allowing the maximum amount of shore-line space for tenders. Randy Zelenka seconded the motion and the motion carried.
Ken Hays and Bob Mullen will be determining estimates of the cost.
Dinghy park: Randy Zelenka moved, Wayne Martin
seconded, and the board approved that the project to expand the dinghy park be
put off until next year. Ken Hays will
work up a design of the proposed expansion.
NEW
BUSINESS:
Reporting of boat registration to Corps of Engineers: We decided that we did not want to tie state registration of boats belonging to the Club to the Corps of Engineers lease. This proposal had been made by Greg Wurst, COE.
Boats belonging to former members who have not renewed their membership: The board agreed that the commodore should send letters to the individuals advising them that they have a specified number of days to either renew membership or remove their boats. After the specified number of days has expired and the person has not renewed membership, the boats will be removed from the BVYC club grounds.
Boy Scout Troop 74 sailing campout on BVYC grounds: The troop leaders had requested permission to conduct such a campout on July 10 and 11; no additional support will be required from members of BVYC. Wayne Martin moved, Tom Albright seconded and the board approved the campout by the scouts.
Scout “pop corn” sailing on July 24: It was mentioned that BVYC had been asked, as they had in past years, to take young scouts and their parents for a ride in a sailboat; this event is a reward to scouts who sold a certain amount of pop corn during their fund raising event. The board agreed that we should support this event with our boat if we are in town.
Tractor keys: The subject of control of tractor keys was revisited. Currently Ken Hays, Bart Bartholomew, Randy Zelenka and Wayne Martin have keys. The policy was not changed. Persons needing a key must obtain certification and a key from one of the above board members.
New brush hog: The deplorable condition of the current brush hog was discussed; repairs will most likely be very costly. Jane Mullen moved, Wayne Martin seconded and the board approved the purchase of a new brush hog and leveling adjuster(s) for the Ford tractor at a cost not to exceed $800.
Harbor lights: The harbor lights that have been approved for purchase have been ordered.
Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at about 9:30 p.m.; next meeting will be on
July 5 at Randy Zelenka’s home.
