The lake elevation on August 16th was 1084, outflow 1000 cfs.
FROM THE EDITOR
The lake is up and the weather is hot. It must be August in Kansas. Hopefully you've gotten
more sailing in than your Secretary. John Joehnk reports that the storms Sunday night did some
mischief at the club. The dock was moved onto the ramp along with the work barge. No boats
broke loose or dragged their moorings but you might want to check your boat. They evidently
got a wild ride and items aboard may have been rearranged.
With the suspension of racing most of the summer activity concerns the growing presence of the
Kansas Sea Scout Ship 5074.
The annual meeting is fast approaching. At that time the 2001 board will be elected. Please don't
wait to be beseeched. Volunteer to serve on next years board. New blood is always needed.
Since I have received no complaints about the new newsletter format, we will continue with this
money saving method of operation. The web version will be posted within a couple of days. To
find it or any past newsletter go to the above web address and click on calendar and then on the
newsletter date - Carl Hinrichs
NEW WEB SITE
As noted above, BVYC now has its own web domain name and is no longer located on Bart's
Home Page. Thank John Joehnk for making the arrangements and Bart Bartholomew for setting
up the pages
JULY BOARD MEETING
As the board holds no meeting in August the minutes of the July meeting are included at the end
of this newsletter.
FROM THE COMMODORE
As has been previously reported Sea Scout Ship 5074 organized by Henry Otto has been seeking
used boats for their fleet. The 26 foot Ranger donated by the Thompsons is now registered to
BVYC and will be leased to KSU Sailing for shared use/maintenance with the Sea Scouts.
Though this may seem a bit round about, it was the way that made the most logistical and legal
sense. Paige Twiss donated his old Sun Fish to the scouts as he is buying a new one. The Sea
Scouts now have a total of 6 boats and are seeking more. Thanks to Paige's and Nancy's
donation they have 2 matched sets of boats; 2 Sunfish and 2 Flying Juniors which makes Henry
Otto grin with glee.
Kudos to Henry Otto for all his hard work putting together the Sea Scout Ship 5074 and all the
additional scout activity. On July 14-16 Boy Scout Troop 74 camped at the club. Last weekend
a group of cub scouts and their parents were taken sailing by club members. Even the heat did
not become a factor as the breeze was great and on the water it was really comfortable. It is so
nice to see activity at the club area and realize its not just a "place to keep boats". The smiles and
fun these kids are having is really rewarding and I think the club is proud of the "ownership" these
activities provide. So far this year 200 scouts and parents will have visited the club. It should be
noted that parents are getting excited about sailing. What better way to pick up new members.
There will be another cub scout sail August 26th. Why not help out?
KANSAS SEA BASE 2000
This weekend from Friday the 18th at 3 pm through Sunday at 11 am, the Sea Scouts will be
camping out at the club as Kansas Seabase 2000. It is an opportunity for area scouts to earn
merit badges in rowing, canoeing, sailboarding, small boat sailing, keel boat sailing and motor
boating. I think it will be an exciting weekend with the scouts camped out and the instructors
there. If anyone would like to help, they probably could use some more sunfish and keel boats
and skippers to instruct. Any club members want to join the fun and excitement of helping these
young people earn merit badges, just show up or contact Henry Otto at 539-4386. Probably
Between 15 and 30 scouts will probably be there. Anyone who may stay away because of the
heat remember if there is a breeze it is quite nice on the lake. The weather bureau predictions are
for temperatures in the 80's on Saturday and Sunday. - John Joehnk
RACING
The Fall Series Race Program will kick off on Sunday, August 27th and continue each Sunday
through September. The race on September 3rd will be the annual long distance race. As in the
past, members who intend to race must notify the race chairman by the Friday before the Sunday
race and must be present for skipper's call at 1 PM on Sunday. Races will begin at 2 PM. There
must be at least 5 entrees or the race will be canceled.
A few new things will be tried during this series. The long distance race will be started in an
easterly direction toward the dam, around a buoy and then up the lake for a distance to be
determined based on wind conditions, around a buoy and back to finish at the start gate. If the
long distance race is canceled due to weather it will be rescheduled the following Sunday.
Three of the four other races will be around the buoys and one will be a novelty race to be
announced. If the Around The Buoys race is canceled due to weather, it will be rescheduled on
the following Wednesday. (Skippers' call at 6:30)
Last year we had a successful fall race program with as many as 20 boats turning out for a couple
of the races. All members are encouraged to give it a try. New members who want to know more
about the program or would like to crew on a boat are encouraged to contact the race chairman.
Chairman Bob can be reached at 539-4759 or email: bobmullen@networksplus.net
WORK DAY
September 9th is our next scheduled work day. The Commodore says there will be two major
projects. Cutting down large growth especially sunflowers at the gate is one so please bring
machetes if you have them. Also a car port type shelter for the committee boat has been
purchased and will be erected that day.
PARKING RESTRICTION
Please note that parking on the grass south of the shelter is not allowed. Besides killing what
grass we have cars are leaving oil drippings. As this is specified as the are for dinghy sail folding
oil is getting on sails. Please park in designated parking area.

Secretary: No Report Social: No Report KSU representative: The KSU sailing club and the Sea Base of the BSA have been in discussion about the arrangements for the ownership of the Ranger keelboat. (See Otto presentation below) Old Business: The secretary will write a letter to delinquent members concerning the non payment of dues while boats are stored on club grounds. Ciaffone moved and Albright seconded that the sign at the gate be moved to the corner of the driveway and the main road. Thomas sign will make for $100. The sign will Read: Blue Valley Yacht Club. New Business: The secretary will send out an email asking for help from the membership for a scout race training event on Sunday. Ciaffone moved and Hays seconded that the club get its own web site and domain name. A discussion followed as to the need for a hard copy of the newsletter. The general feeling was that it was not needed though there was some disagreement. The motion passed with no nays. John will investigate Interkan.net. Henry Otto then presented a report on the Sea Base. There have been 2 successful events so far, a keelboat sail and an around the buoys trial race. The disposition of the Ranger is still under discussion. The favored approach is that the BVYC will own the Ranger and lease it to the KSU Sailing Club. The Sailing Club will have use of the boat in exchange for maintenance. The scheduling of the use of the boat by the Sea Base and the Sailing Club is still under discussion. A final legal agreement will be forthcoming. The Sea Base will need boats and instructors August 18th and 19th. Otto will forward information to the secretary for distribution. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 9:38
