Apologies from your Outgoing Secretary

This has been an interesting fall for the club and for your Secretary. As I was gone for a good part of September and most of October no fall newsletter was forthcoming. For those of you with email connections this has proved no hardship. For those who depend on snail mail you may have missed some of the communication between members. Important information like the plans for the annual meeting and banquet were sent to you via the post office. Communicating on the internet has saved the club a substantial amount of money. I have not heard any negative feedback so I assume that the new board will continue the practice next year. I remind you that all back newletters plus a lot of other club related material are posted on the official club web pages. A heartfelt thank you to Bart Bartholomew for maintaining that site.

Being a secretary in absentia I have had to rely on my fellow board members and to tell the truth very little material has been forth coming. The fall racing season was unfortunately a bust for various reasons. Let us offer up our collective wishes for better lake levels and weather for the coming season.

Our sponsorship of the scout Seabase 2000 has been a winning propositions for both entities. Many scouts have been introduced to the sport of sailing and through them many parents have become aware of the existence of the club. Hopefully the scouts will continue sailing and some their parents will become BVYC members.

The KSU Sailing Club has been very active and has become a partner in the joint effort with the scouts. Henry Otto and the scouts have hammered out a working arrangement for sharing the boats that have been donated to the scouts in return for maintainance and assistance.

All of this activity is beginning to put a strain on our existing facilities. The moorings were all spoken for. The dinghy park is bulging at the seams. The shelter is inadequate for our social activites. The club has 57 memberships as of the end of the year. This steady growth is a good sign. With that growth come challenges for the new board. Your wishes and ideas will I'm sure be appreciated by each of them.

A rousing round of internet applause should be given to T. J. Chiaffone and Renae Cushing for managing the social affairs this year. The banquet at the Elements of Taste Restaurant was a rousing success. For those of you that missed it T. J. made us envious with a slide show of his trip to Antarctica as a teenager.

After two years of bold leadership John Joehnk is stepping down as Commodore. There would not be enough storage space on the site to list all the things that John has done for the club. That he will continue to serve on the board and I'm sure put his talents to work wherever needed takes some of the sting out of his departing office.

The 20001 sailing season will be here before you know it. Remember to get your dues and membership forms in on time. Forms will be available for downloading from the web site or will be mailed to those of you who are without internet access.

I'm sure you'll join me in welcoming the incoming board and wishing them smooth sailing. Please give the all your support.
