HAPPY NEW YEAR Actually, it wasn't such a bad old year at BVYC as several things were accomplished to make future years better for the membership. In early spring, construction of the boatlift was completed allowing boats to be raised off their trailers for inspection, repair or whatever. So far as we know, the committee boat, the KSU boat, Bart's boat, Mullens' boat and Foy's boat have all been in the slings for some reason or another. Beautiful fall weather extended the past sailing season into late fall. This year, members can really extend their season because high tides should no longer prevent entry into the club grounds. In September the dream finally came true when the entrance road was raised some five feet to equal the elevation of the dingy park entrance. So, after a slow start last year due to high lake levels, activity skyrocketed in late summer with unusually high participation in club events. During one of the club races, a possible record breaking 16 boats were seen maneuvering for favorable position at the start line. For most of the season the dinghy park was at near full capacity and all moorings were assigned. The club equipment was usually ready, repair bills were lower and mooring expenses were negligible. In spite of the wind and high water, there was little reported damage to the docks and there should be no winter damage to equipment either because Commodore Joehnk single-handedly pulled the docks from the water for dry storage. So, it was a good year; Year 2000 promises to be even better. A Bargain Year Wow! A good year predicted and dues and fees remain the same. Members are reminded that membership dues and fees must be received by March 1st in order to be listed on the club roster and to receive priority in mooring and dinghy park assignment. Members will normally receive the same mooring and dinghy park assignment that they had the past year if fees are paid by March 1st. Members wishing to change from a previous year's assignment should notify one of the commodores; requests will be accommodated if possible after the March 1st due date. Winter Sailing If you did not yet see the message traffic regarding BVYC sailing around the turn of the millennium check out the club web page to see some pretty nice photos. Take note that Commodore Joehnk had his boat in the water on December 31st and took Bart for a nice final sail of the 1900's. The following day John, Bart and Bob Mullen celebrated the New Year with all the trimmings while tacking in the middle of Tuttle Creek Lake. As early January weather continues on the mild side some members are considering an early launch. First BOD meeting The first board meeting of the new millennium was held on January 4th. Minutes of the meeting are reported below except that the attachment to the minutes (Proposed Calendar of Events) is enclosed as a separate page to this newsletter so that it can be clipped and posted to your refrigerator. What a handy way to keep up with the many BVYC events. Blue Valley Yacht Club Minutes of the meeting of January 4, 2000 1. Call to order: The first meeting of the new year was held at the home of Commodore Joehnk. The commodore called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM. Other members present: Ned Gatewood, Al Brightman, Tom Albright, Bob Mullen, and TJ Ciaffone. 2. Minutes: The commodore read the November BOD meeting minutes. The minutes were approved. 3: Reports: The commodore reported that he had put a new voltage regulator on the tractor and pulled the docks from the water using an improvised sled. He will continue to pull out catwalks and work on an improved hinge system to interconnect docks. The Vice Comdr. had no report but stated that he was concerned about grass cutting for the coming year. He would like to leave a portion of the grass in a natural state. Treasure's report: Savings - $2306.84 Checking - 361.23 Total - 2668.07 Race Director: The Liebler Memorial Race and the Labor Day Race may be held on Monday rather than Sunday. 4. Old Business: None 5. New Business: The board discussed info to be placed on the Year 2000 BVYC application. Al Brightman suggested that members who use VHF radio and/or cell phones should list the call signs and/or cell phone numbers on the application. Bob will see that it is added. The board used the remainder of the meeting to complete a proposed calendar of events for the coming year. The calendar is attached as enclosure to the minutes. During the preparation of the calendar, old business from the August meeting was discussed. This deals with whether or not to continue with the annual pig roast. The pig roast was included in the calendar of events; however TJ will write an article for the newsletter asking the membership if the pig roast should be continued or should the club explore other types of fall gatherings on the BVYC grounds. Bob mentioned his concern for publication of the January newsletter as the secretary is out of town. Bob said that he might have time to get one out by e-mail. The board then discussed the normal mailing of newsletters by e-mail to those who desire this method. The commodore voiced his objection by saying that all members should receive a hard copy for their $60 dues. This issue can be discussed in the newsletter later. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 7:03 PM. Respectfully submitted for the secretary, Bob Mullen, Race Director
BVYC Race Program The race director plans to continue with a program similar to the racing that gained momentum last year. There will be a Spring Series and a Fall Series plus the two traditional long distance races. Participants will be required to call in entry confirmation 2 days prior to the race. A possible change to last year's events involves holding long distance races on Monday rather than Sunday. If members have comments or suggestions regarding club racing they should call the Race Director prior to the publication of the Spring Series in the March newsletter. Pig Roast Survey from T. J. Ciaffone As the Social Chair which I share with my wife Ranae, I would like to get the members' feed back on the idea of replacing the annual pig roast or for use at another of BVYC events. Therefore, I am supplying some options I would like you members to rank in order of preference and write some ideas in the space provided. Cut out the survey and return it with your membership form. This year we could have some different social events, but it would be up you to provide me with ideas to carry out. Thanks for your cooperation. 1. Buffalo steak bar-b-que.
