Thanks to all who showed up for the Spring work day. To those of you who missed, we had copious amounts of rolls, baggles, juice, borots, weiners and sausage. Wow, did Ciaffones do a bang up job for the work day and the banquet. We did get a lot done. A chain gang worked hauling stone from the beach to the new raised road banks for rip-rap (not to be confused with hip-hop) to protect the banks from erosion. However, there was a bit of hip-hopping when some guys got a little exuberant at throwing rocks and others had to get out of the way. The picnic tables were sanded and oiled and the park benches were re varnished. Ned Gatewood had an orientation session on the nuances of the new tractor/mower. Name tags were attached to trailers in the upper park for identification. The club does look pretty well spruced up for the summer sailing season if the lake ever comes up. <grin> The corps was keeping the lake down to facilitate the pouring of a new launch ramp in Stockdale but that project was completed the beginning of April so MAYBE the lake will start to rise. (It has risen - Ed.) The up side of this is that the rivers are not low enough for the terns to nest on the sand banks as was the case the last couple of years and the reason the lake was so high last year. Lets hope. The spring banquet was a huge success, especially Vlastamil Kunc's talk on racing tactics. Just found out that Vlasta is a Fullbright Scholar so we can now boast of having a prestigious club member.. Thanks to the following people who attended the work day: Ken Conrow, Barbara Gatewood, Diane Barker, Renae Ciaffon, T J Ciaffone, Tom Shields, John Joehnk, Ruth Joehnk, Ken Hays, Carl Hinrichs, Bart Bartholomew, Harriet Ottenheimer, Steve Kettleson, Sharon Kettleson, Dave Ross, Bradley Ross, Page Twiss, Bill Foy, Phill Hostetter, Phil's friend Ms. Mullen, and Bill Schapaugh. A Really Social Beginning Kudos to the co-social chairs, TJ and especially Renae Ciaffone for the incredible spread of food for the workday. On top of a complete amd sumptuous breakfast, lunch was a gourmet's delight. Sorry all you people who didn't make it. Maybe next time. Two successes in one day are hard to accomplish but they did by following up the work day feasts with the excellent spring banquet. There is a lot more on the social calendar so make your plans now. Otto in the news. Henry Otto noted for his shipwright skills has been selected by Wooden Boat magazine as their man in Kansas. We have admired his handiwork at the mooring for several years. Congratulations.
Farewell to the Outhaul After more than 20 years of faithful service the Outhaul has earned retirement. A new Sabre tractor/mower manufactured by John Deere was recently purchased to replace it. The old tractor and mower served us well but recently it became undependable and difficult to use. At least once it rolled inadvertently into the lake. While the new John Deere cost $1,900, several hundred dollars were saved by buying last years model. The new tractor is for launching small boats and cutting the grass in tight quarters like the Dinghy Park. All new users are encouraged to take a moment and read the instructions found on the tractor. Please become familiar with the breaking system, particularly when parking on the sloped ramp. The key is kept under the seat. The owners' manual is in the shed if anyone needs more information. Gasoline is also in the shed. Purchase of a shed to store our new pride and joy is under consideration by the board, however the cost for an 8' x 8' shed is about $550, and a simple tarp is probably a more reasonable option. Members, take her for a spin and feel free to do some grass cutting too! - Ned Gatewood Racing A new racing season is about to start this month. Please don't feel to intimidated to join the fun. Contrary to popular opinion we racers are not a cutthroat bunch. Please consult the events schedule and mark your calendars. Skippers' meeting times will be 1:30 on Sunday afternoons and 6:30 on Wednesday evenings. If you would like to volunteer to serve as the committee person for a race I'm sure Bob Mullen would love to hear from you. Ottenheimer Judges Olympics Trials Marti Ottenheimer, a US Sailing judge who trains and tests new judges, last month served as a judge for two US Olympics Sailing Team trials on SanFrancisco Bay. The two fleets involved, Lasers and European Dinghies, each had 16 simultaneous races on the new Olympic parallel courses. Get Marti to explain the system sometime. It's ingenious. Congratulations, Marti on another sailing honor. Marti is the person to the left in the above picture. More fantastic photos of the trials are on the web at www.sfyc.org/website/olympic/slides/pages/ Page 3 Newsletter Change The BVYC has caught up with the digital age. 95 percent of our members now have email connections. By the time this newsletter is duplicated and mailed the expenses will be nearly $50. That is approximately $1 per copy. Since we issue 6 newsletters a season that adds up to $300 of your dues that could be spent for club improvements. The board discussed this matter at the May 1st meeting and we decided that we would begin offering the newsletter by email. This has several advantages and perhaps a drawback or two. Naturally there is the cost savings. The internet costs the club nothing. Secondly, we could produce more issues with intervening bulletins as needed at no additional cost. Finally there is a savings in the time it takes me, the secretary, to format, duplicate and mail the copies. On the downside you wouldn't get such a slick format to read and pictures would have to be handled differently. What about the couple of people who do not have email and those who absolutely insist on a hard copy through the mail? We make the following offer. For those who have no internet connection or absolutely insist on receiving the newsletter by snail mail, the secretary will make a hard copy of the electronic edition and send it via the post office. As for club pictures, Bart maintains the club web site and places many pictures there. I also have a site. Either or both of these places could be repositories for many more pictures in color which then could be viewed and even downloaded and printed. Also copies of newsletters could be placed and archived at these locations. Those of you who do not have email will receive a hard copy of the electronic edition. Any of the rest of you who would prefer to receive a copy in the mail must contact me by phone (785 539 5463) or email at 3014tum@ksu.edu and let me know by the end of May. The board already receives a galley edition of the newsletter for corrections and additions and has indicated that they prefer that method as it is then stored on their computers. The world is changing, folks, and we need to move along with it. Carl Scouts Sea Adventure Post At the May 1 meeting the board of directors approved the sponsorship of a Sea Adventure Post by the BVYC as proposed by club member, Henry Otto. This would establish a youth program at the club that has been long lacking and provide a source for future sailors. The post is open to both boys and girls, 14 to 21 years of age who have completely the 8th grade. The scouts are safety conscious in the extreme and the scout's insurance policy would protect the club from liability. Boats donated to the post would be deeded either to the BVYC or to the K-State Sailing club. These arrangements have yet to be finalized. Adventure posts are established for a particular activity and differ from Explorer Posts, which are career oriented. The club's responsibility would include the storage of the boats and the allowing of access to the club grounds of scouts and their supervisors and instructors. It is also hoped that club members would also become involved in the training activities of the post, and provide leadership and guidance. Otto noted that the Corps of Engineers has in its directives the support of the scouts. Our sponsoring of the post could well serve as another supporting factor to have our annual rent to the corps reduced or eliminated. The board felt that this was too good an opportunity to pass up and hopes that the general membership will be equally supportive. Lake Festival Details of the Lake Festival in June have not been finalized. Look for emails on the subject. Classified BVYC tee shirts and club burgees are always available to members. $15.00 each. Call Bob at 539-4759 1974 Catalina 27. Atomic 4 inboard in very good shape. Heavy duty tandom axil trailer. Harken roller furler and almost new 150% genoa and 110% jib. New bimini and new cushion covers. Two speed primary cockpit winches. AquaMeter compass. Much more.
