Women's Sailing Seminar was a highlight of the year By Diane Barker, Commodore |
June 19 and 20. Saturday morning we had a lively ground school at Java taught by Jane Thompson and Jack Hayes with props provided by Chris Ross. Then on Sunday we got on the water with expert sailing instruction from Marty and Harriet Ottenheimer, Gene Lindgren, Chris Ross, and with Anne Murray on stand-by. Our instructors did a great job, and the students reported that there was no yelling or cursing as they executed the required maneuvers of tacking, jibing, and approaching a mooring or dock. |
Our novice sailors who now simply need to log more time at the helm include Colleen Lindgren, Tracie Kalic, and many Marchins: Anne, Marjorie, Katherine, and Madelaine. Diane Pikul attended the ground school, but we have yet to give her the instruction on the water. Each participant and instructor received a beautiful cap compliments of the club with the BVYC logo stitched on the front. These commemorative caps will certainly become collector's items as I have since learned that these are "old man" style caps. Women, don't let that deter you, sail with pride in those caps. As we say in sailing, "you learn something everyday whether you want to or not." Thanks again to all those who helped put the Women's Sailing Seminar together, especially Henry Otto, and to our participants. It was great fun, and I hope we make sailing seminars a regular part of our club activities. |
And now to the nuts and bolts of the club. I'd like to thank all of the members who have come out for workdays to spruce up the club and those who consistently take the time to mow and tidy up around the shelter, dinghy park, and grounds. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and are appreciated. |

As another great sailing season draws to a close, I'd like to remind you that this is some of the best sailing weather we have on Tuttle Creek. There's nothing like being out on the water with the migrating birds rising off the water around the boat, filling the air with the flash of setting sun on their wings. |
