Zelenka and crew represent BVYC in Perry Commodore's Cup

By Randy Zelenka, Race Director

are enough lines to confuse anyone who hasn't been on that type of boat before.  We had a month to figure it all out and go to Perry Lake to compete.  We practiced as time allowed and everyone had the thrill of a full-blown broach and happy to see the boat actually does right itself.  Our tactician actually got to swim along while lying in the lifelines.

It felt good to compete against larger boats, as we were one of the smallest boats in our fleet but rated the fastest.  We raced well but made our share of tactical errors; a bad spinnaker set or douse or steering down the bad side of the course is all it takes to lose a race.  We got better as we continued to race, and continued improvement by helmsman and crew made the boat go faster. On the last race we took the gun, a nice end to the regatta.

There were 35 boats competing in the regatta, and we did well, finishing the regatta in the top 50 percent and had a great time.  The Perry Yacht Club put on an excellent regatta and we represented the BVYC well.

With the racing itch working hard I read about the Perry Yacht Club Commodore's Cup and decided to assemble crew for the race.  Once I found 4 volunteers (Bob Mullen/Dave Sislo/Ken Hays/Sean Kalic) who were willing to master a sprit boat and spinnaker sets and douses.  The Antrim isn't a complicated boat but there

As most of the local racers know there hasn't been much of a racing season this year.  In the spring we had very strong winds and I began to think the committee boat was possessed and attracted heavy winds once launched.  As the season progressed the committee boat finally succumbed to engine problems beyond repair and was taken to the local shop.  After one attempt to repair the motor is still not operational and it is back in the shop and may have finally had it.
