Race season winding down
By Bob Mullen, Race Director

On October 9th, ten racers and a handful of spectators gathered at BVYC for what may have been the last event of the 2005 race season. The weather was a sunny 68 degrees and water was a degree or two cooler; pretty nice for an October day. A colorful fleet of 5 Sunfish, a Minifish, a Laser, a Lightning and a Snark skimmed the waters in the BVYC harbor for double lap races around a course that included frustrations at the windward mark, a fickle reach and run, an exhilarating reach between anchored boats and some testy winds out near the main body of Tuttle Lake.

There were several close corrected times and first time race official, Jennifer Martin, hoped that her eyes were focused correctly, especially when her father edged out Ken Conrow by two seconds in corrected time. Ahem!! Ancient mariner Franz had a super day but still lamented about hitting a tree stump and his aching 85 year old legs. But when the races were over the subtle complaint of the group was that we didn’t run a third race. That idea was considered by the race director who yielded to the urge to get to shore so that Ned could prepare a party to celebrate Bart’s 39th birthday.

Two races were held on this beautiful day. Marti Ottenheimer won the first event followed by the team Sean Kalic – Henry Otto in second and Franz Samelson in third. The second race was won by Harriet Ottenheimer, followed by Franz in second and Marti in third. In addition to the color of the sails there were interesting features of the day: Harriet virtually flew around the course in the second race but hit the buoy at the finish line. Even after penalty turns she easily captured 1st place. In the combined races there were at least one collision, 4 boom swipes and several near misses. Sean Kalic and Henry Otto had the big boat on the course and did well but had to give way to others on corrected time. Tom McCabe was lauded as a gutsy first time sailor for racing in a Snark that he had not tested.
