Club ends year with Fall Banquet

The Handcocks’ model sailboat and various trophies
create the ambiance for the annual awards banquet

Manhattan’s recently renovated Union Depot was the site of the Club’s Annual Fall Banquet on December 2.  The Club, having grown accustomed to social extravaganzas throughout the year thanks to the hard work and creativity of social chairpersons, Jeff and Jennifer Hancock, found the Fall Banquet to be equally enjoyable.

Upon arrival in the depot, one immediately became aware that the evening belonged to sailors.  The model sailboat surrounded with trophies was indicative of the activities to follow.  Commodore Wayne Martin welcomed members and guests and everyone settled down for a delicious fried chicken dinner, catered by the famous Brookville Hotel.

Following the dinner each board member reported on accomplishments within his purview during the past year.  A major report was that of Race Director Gene Lindgren as he passed out trophies, certificates and wine to the winners of this year’s Club Races.  Members of the Club were once again pleased to have as their guest, Ms. Nancy Chapman from Olathe to present the Chapman, Shipley and Bennett Memorial Trophy.  Ms. Chapman is the mother of Kyle Chapman, one of the three K-State students who lost their lives in a sailing accident on Tuttle Reservoir in December 2001.

The evening ended with a presentation by Dr. John Harrington, Jr., Professor and former Head of the Department of Geography at Kansas State University.  His presentation, “Rapid Global Changes – Assessments, Drivers and Implications” gave each of us much food for thought and discussion on the controversial topic of global warming.

If you missed this year’s Fall Banquet and other social activities, all is not lost.  By unanimous vote, the entire board of directors who served so admirably during 2006 will once more be at the helm of the Blue Valley Yacht Club during 2007.  Thank you directors for a wonder 2006 season.  We will look forward to even greater events in 2007.
